A GOLF club says health and safety lessons have been learned after a greenkeeper’s fingers got mangled in an industrial ball-washer.
The worker suffered a partial amputation of his index finger and serious injuries to his middle and ring fingers in the accident at The Warwickshire Golf and Country Club, in Leek Wootton, in July last year.
At Leamington Magistrates Court the firm which owns the sports complex, Club Company (UK) Ltd, was ordered to pay a fine, compensation and costs totalling more than £26,000 after admitting breaching health and safety laws.
Speaking after the hearing, Simon Jones, the firm’s general manager, said: “The regrettable incident has placed a spotlight on a weakness in an area of our documentation of training records that has subsequently been rectified.
“The club has put strict measures in place to ensure that the risk of any future incident has been minimised.”
He added that the venue had enjoyed an “impeccable health and safety record” until this incident.
The court had heard how the victim was trying to unjam the ball-washing machine when his left hand was pulled into the rotating parts.
